Against the rapid iteration of digital cultural tourism, traditional static landscapes can no longer meet the public’s diverse and immersive aesthetic demands. Pioneering digital light and shadow art has gradually become a core carrier for urban renewal and cultural tourism upgrading. Blessed with stunning coastal scenery and profound humanistic heritage, Gangneung City of South Korea strives to bridge the gap between natural landscapes and modern art while elevating the texture of urban public spaces. A giant spherical LED art installation has been newly launched with the core concept of “Spherical Vision”, empowering art with technology to build a brand-new urban landmark for Gangneung that integrates ornamental value, artistic appeal and social popularity. Different from the single and rigid visual presentation of traditional flat display screens, the spherical screen adopts a 360° full-curved three-dimensional structure, completely breaking perspective restrictions and eliminating visual blind spots. It constructs a floating panoramic light and shadow space, freeing digital images from flat constraints and allowing them to flow vividly in three-dimensional space, achieving an all-round breakthrough in visual effects.
Tailored precisely to Gangneung’s urban temperament and cultural tourism scenario characteristics, this locally launched spherical immersive art installation achieves dual upgrades in hardware presentation and artistic expression. Equipped with high-definition color rendering technology and a dynamic light and shadow rendering system, it delivers delicate and rich color layers as well as smooth and fluid dynamic images, perfectly adapting to diverse content outputs including creative short films, light and shadow art displays, urban promotion videos and atmospheric special effects. Breaking the passive viewing mode of conventional landscape installations, the spherical screen creates an all-dimensional immersive experience. Audiences can view the work from multiple surrounding angles and gain unique visual perceptions at every position, truly realizing the effect of “scenery changing with every step and beauty covering every perspective”. The integration of technological light and shadow with Gangneung’s coastal features and urban humanistic atmosphere endows cold digital technology with artistic warmth, transforming ordinary public leisure spaces into perceptible, interactive and resonant digital art experience venues.
As a benchmark art project for Gangneung’s urban digital upgrading and cultural tourism innovation, the spherical light and shadow installation not only enriches the urban night landscape system, but also reshapes the city’s visual business card and artistic style. Amid the integrated development trend of culture and tourism, it breaks the homogenization dilemma of traditional urban landscapes and injects new vitality into urban public spaces with avant-garde, trendy and high-end digital art forms, greatly enhancing the artistic atmosphere and online communication potential of the site. A cross-border integration achievement of technology and art, it serves as a brand-new carrier for Gangneung’s urban cultural output. The installation effectively boosts the city’s cultural tourism appeal and brand influence, empowers the development of urban night tourism economy and cultural tourism industry, and enables Gangneung to glow with futuristic digital art charm on the basis of its classic coastal style.
